22 Mar 2022

By F. Aslam The Avissawella Magistrate’s Court has ordered the Kosgama Police to collect telephone records with regard to the case over death threats being made to Aruna News Editor Chaminda Senaratne. Police Media Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa said that telephone companies have been requested to provide information regarding the two numbers that were used to make the threatening calls to the News Editor. An article published in the Aruna newspaper on 15 March under the headline “Suddenly rich policemen” had revealed the allegedly illicit assets held by several police officers.  Senaratne claims that he received the said threats on the afternoon of last Friday (18), when he was in his office, via phone numbers 0712293495 and 00916282807305. The threatening calls are suspected to have been made by a person or two persons close to an SSP mentioned in said article. The callers had told Senaratne that they knew his place of residence, and threatened the safety of his loved ones. They had said: “You are slinging mud at our SP sir and (we) will not let you live longer than three more weeks.” In addition, the caller had claimed that Senaratne’s area of residence and house had been identified, and told the latter to keep his house cleaned, and that he would not be allowed to celebrate the Sinhala Tamil New Year. Senaratne had requested the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate the reasons that have led to these threats against him, and to ensure the safety of his wife and three children. The journalist had lodged a complaint with the IGP via email. However, the Police have not revealed any information regarding the investigation so far.
